The Coach of the Year award first rolled out in 1957 and has been part of the NFL's tradition since then. George Wilson was the first recipient of this prize.

With more than 60 years of the tradition continuing till this day, a wide plethora of Football coaches have won the prize. Don Shula has received the most awards, i.e. 4.

The NFL does not hand out this award for a linear success pattern, for instance, winning the Super Bowl. The coach's success is measured and adjusted by multiple factors.

The award is annually presented by the Associated Press. Due to this, the achievement is also referred to as the AP NFL Coach of the Year.

The odds for the 2023 honors have seen many coaches like Mike Tomlin, Sean Payton, and Doug Pederson. Payton has displayed a great turnaround, rebounding the 1-5 Broncos to 6-5 in Week 12 of the 2023 season.

Under Brian's leadership, the New York franchise also won their first playoff game in eleven years. They defeated the Minnesota Vikings by 31-24 in the Wild Card round.

Brian was a key element in leading the team to its resurgence in his debut year as the Giants head coach. The team had faltered in the 2021 season with a disastrous 4-13 win-loss record under Joe Judge.

The opening weeks started difficult for the franchise, with the injury of their starting QB Rex Grossman. They won only 1 of the first 4 games, and people speculated that Lovie's second season would be disastrous just like his 2004 one. However, Smith eventually came out on top.

From Week 6 to Week 13, the Bears gained consecutive victories. Lovie made great tactical adjustments, and five of the starters managed to reach the Pro Bowl that year. LB Lance Briggs and DT Tommie Harris were among them.
