NFL pension plan for players is determined by the number of seasons played. Average NFL pension salary rose from $30,000 to $46,000 per year.

The NFL has had a pension scheme since 1965 and players get different schemes after retirement. Its main objective is to provide tax-deferred savings for employees of the NFL.

An American football quarterback, Tom Brady is a player accumulating a high NFL pension of $292.9 million. While an American football tight end, Tyrone Swoopes set the record of the lowest-paid NFL player in 2021.

NFL players who retired in the 1980s or 1990s can receive a pension between $3000 to $5640 per month. Those who retired after 1998 can receive $5640 per month.

NFL Pension Requirements

NFL pension eligibility age is above 55. But if the player had a Credited Season before 1993, then may be able to receive a pension a decade earlier at age 45.

  • The previous players who are in the Hall Of Fame do not receive a specific pension outside of what other former NFL players receive

How Many Years Do You Have To Play In The NFL To Get A Pension

The NFL players must play for three seasons to get a pension. They are eligible to receive benefits negotiated under the collective bargaining agreement.

They earn credit for each season they play. The amount of pensions depends upon their credit. The player can get more pension amount if they provide more credit.

If a player wants to receive money earlier then he may receive lesser money plus penalties for taking a pension earlier. The benefit greatly increases for the player who can wait until 65 to take a pension.

If the players retire at a young age, they cannot access their full NFL retirement benefits.

OJ Simpson Pension From NFL

OJ Simpson NFL pension monthly is $4,034 if he elected to take it out at age 55 and $10,565 if he took it out at 65.

Simpson spent 11 seasons in the National Football League where he played 9 seasons with the Buffalo Bills and 2 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. As he played before 1982, he receives $250 for every season played. Multiplying that with 11 results in $2750 a month.

A settlement from 2011 allows former players to receive an extra monthly payment of $124 per season played before 1975 and $108 per season after that. As OJ played six years before 1975 and 5 years afterward, he gets extra cash of $1284. The total adds up to $4024 monthly if he collected it starting at 55 years old.

Simpson was widely known as the greatest running back of all time and had a total of 14,368 yards and scored 76 touchdowns during his career.

The running back is an inductee of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

NFL Retirement Pension

Minimum NFL pension of the player is just $21,000 per year. Players get this pension after playing for three seasons only.

Average NFL Pension

The average NFL pension salary is $46000. The new collective bargaining agreement changes the pension system by increasing the payment from an average of $30000.

The new CBA also declared a 25 percent increase in the Medicare supplement benefit to players over 65.

It also plans to make a program that ensures former athletes without insurance receive mental health services, preventative care, orthopedic care, and other health interventions at no cost to the player, as per NBC Sports

After Three Years

NFL pension after 3 years is $19,800 annually for life. Based on expected annual NFL revenue growth, that figure is expected to rise to $22,000 in 2025.

Previously the NFL players had to play 4 seasons to receive a pension but now this is lowered in 2020. If a player played at least 3 seasons in the league then they are entitled to a lifelong pension.

An additional retirement bonus in the form of an annuity is given to the players with the 3 years of services.

After Five Years

NFL pension after 5 years includes health insurance after retirement. It can cost up to $35,000 annually just in premiums.

The NFL Dedicated Hospital Network Program provides players with medical care worth $25,000 annually and mental health services worth $25,000 annually.

After Ten Years

NFL pension after 10 years is $43,560 a year, pre-tax, for the player who played prior to 1993.

A 10- years NBA veteran who played after 1965 will get a pension of $215000 a year at age 62 while a 10-year MLB veteran who played after 1993 will get a pension of $200,000 a year approximately at age 62, as per Pension Parity

A pension of $105000 per year is lower when we compare it to the maximum pension that is offered by the MLB and NBA for 10 years. NBA 10 years veterans get paid $215000.

Average NFL Retirement Age

Average retirement age in NFL is approximately 27 years old. The average NFL career is not very long which lasts 3.3 years.

Those numbers are shorter than the same statistics for the NBA, MLB, and NHL. NBA includes (five years, 28 years old), MLB includes (five years, 29.5 years old), while NHL includes (six years, 28.2 years old).

Most football players are forced to retire at an early age because of injuries.

Quarterbacks and kickers are the only positions with an average of 4 years of career span. Running backs has the shortest career span with an average of 2.5 years in the NFL.

Is The Age Of Retirement Going Up

The retirement age of NFL players ranges from 28 to 39 on average.

Ben Roethlisberger, Rob Gronkowski, Andrew Whitworth, and Frank Gore are the main players who retired in 2022. Ben, Rob, Andrew, and Frank retired at the age of 39, 29, 40, and 39 respectively.

Philip Rivers, Jason Witten, Greg Olsen, Mike Pouncey, and Maurice Pouncey retired in 2021. Philip was 39 years old when he retired while Maurice retired at the age of 31 years.

By comparing the past two years' data, it is concluded that different players retired at different ages and they retire for several reasons, such as age-boundness, severe injuries, etc.

How Many NFL Players Retire Each Year

66 players retired in 2022. Jay Ajayi, Ricardo Allen, Kiko Alonso, Blake Bortles, and Brandon Brooks are among them.

In 2021, 32 players retired. Philip Rivers, Jason Witten, Greg Olsen, Mike Pouncey, Maurkice Pouncey, and Thomas Davis are from different teams and they retired in 2021.

However, in the 2020 NFL, 50 players retired. Oday Aboushi, Jahleel Addae, Mario Addison, Ryan Allen, Tyson Alualu, Danny Amendola, Ezekiel Ansah, and Ray-Ray Armstrong are some retired players of 2020.

By analyzing the past three years data we have found that the rate of retirement of the NFL player is different in each year.

NFL retirement plan benefits include the Second Career Savings Plan. This is a 401k plan where the employees' input is matched by the employer, two-for-one.

  • Former players under the age of 55 can get the life insurance
  • A Medicare Supplement Program pays for the Medicare Supplement Insurance for former athletes who are 65 or older
  • A neurological care program pays the expenses for neurological work on the body
  • Provide assisted-living facilities
  • A spine treatment program covers all expenses
  • Former and current NFL players get educational and self-development resources from the NFL Player Engagement
  • Retired NFL players also get the severance payment as a lump-sum post-retirement check

NFL Health Insurance After Retirement

Health insurance after retirement for NFL players is received when they played for more than five seasons.

However, the league covers their healthcare for only five years after retirement. Afterward, their health insurance may cost nearly $35000 yearly on premiums.

Discount prescription benefits, work/life resources coverage, vested inactive life insurance, etc. are provided to the players.

In the MLB, players are eligible for lifetime health benefits while playing a single day. If a player is in the league for four or more seasons in the NBA, then they receive health care.

The NHL guarantees lifetime healthcare subsidies. But even though the NFL generates more money, its veteran benefits are low compared to their fellow American sports league.
