Why Does Sam Howell Have A South Korean Flag On His Helmet?

Sam Howell's South Korean flag on his helmet represents his Korean lineage. He donned the flag to honor his grandmother, Han Howell.

The Washington Commanders Quarterback has South Korean roots. Han, his grandmother, is from that nation.

His grandfather is American, and he was a soldier stationed in Korea in 1960. The two met, returned to the US, and settled in North Carolina.

Last November, in 2022, his grandmother passed away. The South Korean flag is a memoir of her love and affection towards her grandchild.

Sam said, "She watched all of my games all throughout high school, through college. ... Our relationship was awesome. She meant the world to me - still means the world to me."

Puka Nacua, a Los Angeles Rams Wide Receiver, had the Samoan flag. It is a tribute to his grandmother, who was born in Samoa. She passed away in 2021.

Sam Howell Korean flag helmet is an ode to his late grandmother. It is an effort to reflect and embrace his Korean ancestry.

The national flag decals on the helmet are a part of the NFL Heritage Program, which started on October 19. It authorized players and coaches to represent their heritage.

The Heritage Program aims to promote diversity and honor people's different backgrounds. International country flags and territory decals were allowed on players' helmets. The coaching staff were permitted to have it on their jackets, t-shirts, sweaters, and other clothing.

The decals can be directly related to the person embracing it or represent any relatives and their ancestry. One can display affection for a place where they have resided for at least two years.

It must be parallel to the helmet's US flag and can remain on the headgear for the rest of the 2023 campaign.

NFL Executive Vice President Club Business, Peter O'Riley, said, "This initiative allows us to celebrate the heritage, families, and cultures that make up the fabric of the League, and truly showcases the growing global reach and impact the sport of football and the NFL."

More than 330 people participated in this initiation.

John Madden NFL patch made its first entrant on all six teams' jerseys playing on Thanksgiving day on November 23, 2023.

The black and gold patch depicting Madden in his iconic broadcast headset was on the jerseys. It was placed on the left side above the number.

John Madden patch Lions is the celebration of the iconic figure John Madden. His contribution as an NFL coach and sportscaster is colloquial.

Likewise, the NFL Foundation gave a $10K donation to the best player. The donation went to the player's chosen high school or youth football program.

The 2023 Turkey Day games were also monumental, as a special coin was made for this occasion. Madden represented the heads, while the tails had a six-legged turducken.

John started the six-legged turducken tradition in 1989. It was the prize given to the best player of the match. It was called the John Madden Turkey Leg MVP Award.

Why John Madden?

John is one of the most critical figures of the NFL. He is credited for making broadcasting relevant and entertaining.

He is the same person on whom the first EA Madden NFL video game was based. He holds the record for most appearances in the Madden NFL cover. He was honored as the Madden NFL cover in Madden 23.

The Super Bowl XI-winning coach has been involved in football since 1950. He played for the Jefferson High School.

Similarly, he played college football for the Oregon Ducks (1953-54), San Mateo College (1954-55), Grays Harbor College (1956), and Cal Poly Mustangs (1957-58).

He was the 244th pick in the 1958 NFL Draft but never played professional football due to a threatening knee injury.
