There is a popular saying in the NFL: Offense wins you games while Defense wins you championships. Nobody should underestimate the silent guardians: the defense. They're the wall against TDs, the plays disruptors, and the creators of turnovers.

So, it is crucial to understand that the real heroes aren't always the ones making TDs. It can be the men in the trenches, the backfield blitzers who shut down the show before it even starts.

Although the offense gets more spotlight from the fans and media (specifically QBs, WRs, and RBs), the defensive department also gets some highlights during sacks and interceptions.

A strong defense is more than just stingy points; it is a psychological warfare that forces the opponent's offense to second-guess every move.

Here is the list of the top NFL teams that have maintained a strong defense throughout Week 13 of the 2023 season.

1. Cleveland Browns

The 2023 Cleveland Browns defense has been a brickwall this season. Anchored by the monstrous Myles Garrett and bolstered by the veteran savvy of Dalvin Tomlinson and Shelby Harris, they rank first in passing defense, suffocating QBs with a 56% completion rate.

Their rushing defense yields a measly 4.1 yards per carry, making them a nightmare for any running back. This dominance translates to statistics: league-best 263 yards allowed per game and a historic DVOA performance ranking amongst the top 7 since the 1981 season.

The marvelous defensive performance is game-changing, propelling the Browns into playoff contention and giving the Cleveland faithful a reason to roar.

With weeks left in the 2023 season, the Browns' defense will look to shut down notable teams like the Bears, NY Jets, Bengals, and the Texans.

2. Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens defense, long known for its ferocity, has reached new heights in 2023. Led by mastermind coordinator Mike MacDonald, they're not just stingy, they're historic. They have suffocated other teams with the league's fewest 15.6 points allowed per game.

With the dominant presence of the linebacker duo Roquan Smith and Tyus Bowser, the Ravens currently boast the NFL's top-ranked defense alongside the Browns.

Their swarming blitz has generated a league-leading 49 sacks, while their stingy secondary surrenders a mere 284.4 points per game, second-best in the league.

Plentiful Takeaways, 6 interceptions, and numerous fumble recoveries have often turned the tide in their favor. This Ravens defense has become a bonafide championship contender, striking fear into the hearts of every opponent.

With the final weeks approaching for the 2023 regular season, the Ravens will face some offensive juggernauts like the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins.

3. Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys' 2023 defense has been a tale of two halves. In the first half, they were a dominant force, shutting down opponents and leading the league in DVOA ranking.

However, cracks started to appear after their humiliating loss to the 49ers in the Week 5 game. Moreover, the Week 3 Cardinals debacle and the Thursday Night Seahawks struggle exposed problems in the run defense and pass coverage.

Nevertheless, the Cowboys have strengthed their defense again by Week 13. The franchise ranks third in yards allowed per game with 289.9. Their overall efficiency and ability to generate turnovers remain strengths. They are also tied for second in the turnover department (10).

They have won back-to-back victories against teams like the Philadelphia Eagles (33-13), Washington Commanders (45-10), and Carolina Panthers (33-10).

Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence have been unstoppable forces, while Trevon Diggs still showcased his secondary skills.

4. Kansas City Chiefs

( Source : twitter )

The 2023 Kansas City Chiefs defense has displayed flashes of brilliance, ranking among the NFL's best in key metrics like blitzing efficiency and expected points added allowed.

Chiefs' aggressive blitzing schemes have terrorized opposing QBs, particularly when bringing 5+rushers. Their 4.9 yards allowed per play in these scenarios leads the NFL, and their negative 45.94 EPA against five-plus blitzes is simply dominant.

By Week 13, the Chiefs ranked sixth in the yards allowed per game department (299.9), while ranking third in sacks (42). George Karlaftis has accumulated 9 sacks to date.

However, the franchise's defense has struggled to contain the offensive surge of top opponents like the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, where they surrendered early TDS and never fully recovered.

The absence of star defenders like L'Jarius Sneed and Willie Gay Jr. has showcased weaknesses in coverage and pass rush.

5. San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers contain the stingiest defense in the NFL, surrendering a mere 15.8 points per game. Opponents tremble before their brick wall.

Their turnover is also the highest in the League (11), resulting in them terrorizing the offense quite often. The rushing defense also ranks third in the NFL (139.6 yards per game).

The pass rush continues to remain elite in the 223 season, led by the ever-fearsome DE Nick Bosa. Nick has already racked up 9.5 sacks this season and is constantly putting pressure on the opponent QBs.

Meanwhile, the 49ers secondary has also shown flashes of brilliance, with Talanoa Hufanga emerging as a playmaker with 3 interceptions and 4 passes defended.

Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks has made brilliant schemes, maximizing blitzes and disguising coverages, keeping offenses guessing. With a 10-3 record, the franchise is on cruise to clinch the top NFC seed this season.

6. Miami Dolphins

( Source : twitter )

The Miami Dolphins have made great strides in their defensive performance in the 2023-24 season. Under head coach Mike McDaniel's leadership, the Dolphins have transformed into a dominant top-10 defensive force.

The Dolphins' run defense has been impressive as they rank fifth in the league in rushing yards allowed (95.5 per game) and have held opposing RBs to an average of 3.8 yards per carry.

Led by Christian Wilkins and Emmanuel Ogbah, the defensive line has been hazardous against the run, while Linebacker Jerome Baker has become a sensational tackling machine with 69 tackles this season.

The Dolphins are also tied for third in sacks (42) alongside Bills, Colts, and Chiefs. They have generated consistent pressure on opposing QBs.

The addition of edge rusher Jaelan Phillips has offered the Dolphins a powerful boost in the pass rush, while veterans like Emmanuel Ogbaha and Andrew Van Ginkel continue to be a disruptive force.

7. Detroit Lions

( Source : twitter )

The Detroit Lions defense in the 2023 season has been historic. Their run defense has been particularly great, as they allowed only 1,122 yards and 83 points in the first four games. With a 9-4 record, they are en route to qualify for the playoffs this season.

By Week 13, the Lions' rush defense ranking was in the ninth position. They allowed only 96.8 rushing yards per game. Similarly, they rank in the top 10 for the rushing attempts per play (3.9).

Making an average of 322.4 defense yards in the entire season till Week 13, the Lions have generated 28 sacks this year.

Although this stat is at the bottom of the table, DE Aiden Hutchinson has racked up 6.5 sacks and terrorized QBs. His relentless pursuit has set the tone for the entire defense.

8. New England Patriots

( Source : twitter )

The New England Patriots' defensive performance in the 2023 season has been a mixed bag. With a 3-10 record, they have not lived up to their usual dominant standards, but have shown flashes of brilliance.

With Matthew Judon's relentless pursuit and Christian Barmore's explosive power generating 4 and 4.5 sacks respectively, the Patriots' pass rush can strike fear into the hearts of opposing offenses. They've consistently pressured opposing QBs and generated turnovers.

Meanwhile, with a staggering 3rd-place ranking in rushing yards allowed (88.2), the Patriots run defense resembles a good brick wall. They also lead the league in the yards per rush attempt category (3.2) as of Week 13.

Due to their stronger run defensive game, mobile QBs have a harder time waltzing through unchallenged, and big plays are minimal.

Despite losing veteran Devin McCourty to retirement, the secondary department has held its own. Rookie CB Jack Jones has shown promise, while veterans like Jalen Mills and Adrian Phillips have offered stability.

9. New York Jets

( Source : twitter )

Contrary to the offensive struggle of Aaron Rodgers' injury and Zach Wilson's performance, the defensive side has made good improvements in the 2023 season. The pass rush and secondary have become their strengths while the run defense lags.

The Jets boast a young, hungry pass rush led by the dynamic duo of Jermaine Johnson Jr. (6.5 sacks) and Quinnen Williams (3 sacks). Their pressure has weakened the opposing QBs and generated turnovers, ranking them 15th in the league in sacks (36).

By Week 14, the Jets have given up the ninth fewest yards on average, i.e. 312.7 yards. They also rank 12th in the average yards allowed per rush attempt (4.1).

Rookie CB Sauce Gardner has lived up to the hype, covering receivers and making highlight-reel plays. Likewise, the Jets have a ball-hawking secondary with a knack for takeaways with veterans like Jordan Whitehead and Ashtyn Davis.

10. Atlanta Falcons

( Source : twitter )

The Atlanta Falcons' defense has been a rollercoaster in 2023, displaying exciting potential but plagued by inconsistency. The franchise ranked 10th in the average defense yards (300.2).

The team has top blitzes with veteran tackles David Onyemata (45 tackles and 3.5 sacks) and Grady Jarrett (23 tackles and 1.5 sacks). Their pressure disrupts plays and opens lanes for teammates.

The team is in the middle of the league when it comes to rushing yards per game (110.9), while they rank in the top 10 for rushing yards per attempt allowed per play (3.9).

One of the major weaknesses is Missed tackles which have become a constant thorn in their side. They rank bottom in missed tackles, negating their good defense ranking.

11. New Orleans Saints

( Source : twitter )

The 2023 New Orleans Saints defense has defied expectations and emerged as a force to be reckoned with. This Saints D is hungry and ready to prove they're a key piece of a potential playoff run.

With 322.5 defense yards on average this season, the Saints have established great pass defense. They rank seventh in the League by Week 13 (189.5). Rookies like Bryan Bresee (1.5 sacks) have joined hands with veterans like Carl Granderson (6.5 sacks) to make a relentless wave of pressure.

Meanwhile, CB Marshon Lattimore remains a lockdown corner, and S Tyrann Mathieu's addition has become a game-changer.

The team still lags in the running game department, as they sit in the bottom 10 of the league for rush defense (131.5 yards per game).

12. Carolina Panthers

( Source : twitter )

Although the Carolina Panthers have an abysmal 1-12 record in the 2023 NFL season, the defense has made some good performances in a variety of manner. They are ranked fourth in yards allowed per game (298.4).

The Panthers' run defense has been porous at times, ranking 22nd in the league in rushing yards allowed (123 per game). They have struggled to hold mobile QBs and have given up some big runs.

However, the opponents have exploited their weaker pass-rush defense. The franchise has not generated much QB pressure to change the season output and is last in sacks (20). The Panthers still boast a young and talented pass rush, led by Brian Burns (6 sacks) and Derrick Brown (1 sacks).

The secondary department has also been inconsistent, particularly in the slot. Donte Jackson has had a solid season, but the rest of the group still struggles to cover the top receivers consistently.

The Panthers will seek to improve their defensive game against the Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers in the upcoming weeks.

13. Los Angeles Rams

( Source : twitter )

The Los Angeles Rams have been a mediocre team overall with a 6-7 record. However, they still have a strong defense that can make them good playoff contenders. As of Week 13, they ranked 16th in the average defense yards allowed (330.8).

DT Aaron Donald remains a force of nature, accumulating 6 sacks and anchoring the defensive line. He's supported by emerging talents like Greg Gaines (1 sack) and A'Shawn Robinson (3 tackles for loss), creating an impressive front that disrupts the offensive backfields.

In the secondary department, the Rams lost Jalen Ramsey, but players like Jorden Fuller have stepped up with 6 passes defended.

14. Buffalo Bills

( Source : twitter )

The Buffalo Bills have become a dominant force in the 2023 season. They currently rank 14th in the average defense yards per game (321.9 ypg).

One of the biggest strengths of the Bills' defense is their ability to generate pressure on opposing QBs. They rank third in the NFL in sacks (42) and have a good pressure percentage. This constant pressure has led to 12 interceptions and has made it difficult for opposing offenses to move the ball.

Similarly, they rank in the middle of the league in terms of rushing yards allowed (114e ypg) and have only allowed nine rushing TDs in 2023. This ability to shut down the run makes it hard for the opposing teams to create a sustained offensive attack.

15. Chicago Bears

( Source : twitter )

The 2023 Chicago Bears defense has been a story of two distinct chapters. Early on, it was a team filled with inconsistency and a league-worst 34.3 points allowed per game. But since October, a remarkable transformation has taken place.

The Bears have surrendered just 19.9 points per game in their last eight contests, which is a drastic improvement. They also rank second in terms of rushing yards allowed per game (83.7 ypg).

In the secondary, CB Jaylon Johnson has snagged 4 interceptions by Week 13, while rookie Tyrique Stevenson is proving a valuable asset.
