Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Day History

Lions have been playing the Turkey Day game every year since 1934. The only interruption was for 6 years during World War II from 1939 to 1944.

In 1934, G.A. Richardson had purchased the Portsmouth Spartans (Detroit Lions today) and scheduled a holiday matchup between the Lions and the Bears as a part of an advertising and marketing campaign that drew a lot of attendance.

The game was attended by 26,000 fans on 29 November 1934 where the defending back-to-back world champion, the Chicago Bears beat the Lions by 19-16 score.

It has already been eight decades since it all started and the franchise holds a record of 37-44-2 in the annual holiday classic they commenced.

The team was the primary host and practitioner of the T-Day games although it is not officially agreed or written anywhere they held the right since they began and continued the tradition for the longest period of time.

There are several other teams who have played in the Turkey Day games but only the Lions and the Cowboys have continued to host the tradition.

The Detroit-based franchise has also secured a network deal with NBC to broadcast the holiday games across their almost 100 stations in the country.

Dallas Cowboys entered the T-Day games in 1966 only as a result of the team's general manager Tex Schramm's hunger for more publicity in the country when they were barely known as America's team.

The holiday game enriched the franchise with immense publicity and popularity. Their first game in 1966 was attended by 80,259 fans. They have played every T-Day game since the time except for in 1975 and 1977 when it was given to St. Louis Cardinals.

Why Do The Detroit Lions Always Play On Thanksgiving?

Detroit Lions always play on Thanksgiving because they are the ones who started the tradition in 1934 decided by Richards to attract fans.

Since that time, it has been something the league owes to the Lions which has now become an important culture for sports fans across America and as necessary as the Turkey Day dinner.

Although it began as a marketing move by the owner of the franchise it has become an inseparable part of the national holiday in the United States.

It was from the same time when stadium seats began holding out for holiday games in the National Football League. The team is appearing in their 84th T-Day game this November.

The third game on the same holiday was added from the 2006 season to be played on primetime and there are no fixed teams that are to appear in the game. It is decided by the League.
